Introductions

Hi everybody -- I thought since we are all a mishmosh of friends that met various ways I would add a place for us each to introduce ourselves, tell a little about why we are here and how we got involved in LWL. I had the idea because I want to introduce my friend Gina, who joined last night. Then I realized I hadn't introduced myself! So I will, in a comment. Please add a comment with your intro when you have a minute.

  1. I'm Kathy, and I got involved in LWL because I know our organizer Geeta and many of our other ladies through tennis. I've also met some of you who aren't tennis nuts through Geeta. I live in Pleasant Valley, and I have two kids, Joe age 14 and Katie age 11. My husband Vinny is a retired NYC firefighter and also plays tennis (when not injured!). I work from home in my own public relations consulting business, KMorrisPR. I also play the guitar and love to sing in a group at church. A new challenge for me this year is that I am trying to write a book. Well see how that goes!

Some of you already know that becoming addicted to tennis coerced me into getting healthier 2 years ago. Even though I hate running and working out, I started lifting weights and running every day to have more strength and stamina for my tennis game. I even ran my first 5K, and then another! I also lost 30 pounds. I've slacked off over the last 6 months (partly because I got mono, just like Roger Federer, but no connection, I swear), and by the end of the holiday season, 12 pounds had crept back on. So here I am, to get rid of those, and the last 10 I meant to lose before. I asked my friend Gina to join because she is fun, is facing the same challenges we all are and is motivated to make changes. She and I have kids the same age and share a love of pictures and scrapbooking (though I never have time!). We worked together for 3 years to create the West Road yearbook before my kids graduated. So that's me! I'm ready to be smaller!

  2. I'm Ellen and I know/am friends w/a few of the LWL ladies. I'm a mom of 4 teenagers (talk about stress!) and have a husband who commutes to Manhattan each day and works at Memorial Sloane Kettering. I also work for Arlington as a home teacher, so our lives are crazy-busy.

Two years ago this week I joined Weight Watchers (and am still regularly attending meetings--a small miracle in itself!) and, throughout the course of that journey, have come w/in .2 lb. of my goal weight loss of 40 lbs--but have yet to acheive it. Now, not only have I not made my goal, I've begun to gain--about 7 lbs--quite a bit for my 5' 1" frame. Therefore I've again resolved, before things get too out of control, to get back on track and start moving in the right direction again. I've begun that by recommitting to daily visits to the gym (went 6 days a week when the weight was, almost literally, falling off in '07) and am also being more diligent in tracking my food consumption and being accountable for what goes in my mouth.

I look forward to offering support and encouragement to those of you who are facing the same challenges that I am, and in receiving that support in return. If there's one thing I learned at WW, it's that we're stronger as a group!

  3. I'm Geeta and really wanted us to have accountability to make this getting fit deal to work. I am certainly learning a lot. The friendships that'll come out of this will be extra and really a great bonus.
I am active and I really eat more than I should I guess, because I am flipping old!!!! (I guess, or so the darned books and magazines tell me). It seems that eating like I used to, is not good enough. I need to eat less and smarter. My activites have to be smarter ones too. So the journey begins. Old habits die hard, but will definitely give it a good try.
I have 3 kids, 25, 24, Both Reshma and Rajiv work in NYC and Sean 11, a 6th grader, who doesn't have an ounce of body fat in his body, darn it. My husband Simon is active as well and has curbed his peanut butter m and m's diet and is eating very healthy now. (better than me I think)
So it begins......this is really the first time ever I am serious about getting fit in an organized way!

  4. Hi there, I am Gina a 37 year old stay - at - home- mom of 4 girls 13 1/2, 11 1/2, 8 1/2 and 6 1/2. I have actively put on weight with child. I have struggled and gotten off up to 25lbs a few times but always seem to fall back into the same habits. I usually do best with weight watchers and even tried nutrisystem last year. My husband (of almost 15 years .. March is our anniversary!) works rotating shifts. Meaning EVERY week he's on a different shift. So somedays we are eating a big meal (like a dinner) at 2:00 before he heads in to work ... which really throws me off sometimes. I really want to lose some weight before our anniversary. We talk about going away but not sure yet, but still I would love to be down some weight by then... plus this year is my 20 year reunion. As of right now nothing is planned but I do NOT want to see everyone looking as heavy as I am. Although, I have reconnected with many of them on facebook recently and they have seen pictures of me looking this way sigh
I agree Ellen, we are stronger as a group! :-)

  5. Hi!
I'm Lynne and for 4 years I've been telling myself, I'm not that big, even though I wear a large size, weight a lot and can't believe "that's really me" when I see a photo. I want to be healthier and of course lose weight. My problem is everything in my life revolves around food. My husband and I are both trained chefs, we cook good food which is predominately healthy, big problem we eat too much of it. My husband is a big guy but not fat. We have two kids Jackson (14, as of yesterday) and Sawyer (girl) 12, who are normal/thin and the tallest kids in their class. Did I mention I'm 5'5" and have been the shortest member of my family for almost 2 years. We eat out and attend many functions where food is always the main event. I love to eat out! This past weekend was my husband's birthday, we went to pricey NYC restaurants and I had fish, for app's & entrees & shared desserts with the table, no problem. Sun. we went to a Super Bowl party & I blew it. I never order nachos because I am powerless in their presence. The hostess put the platter right in front of me and I must have eaten a weeks worth of calories, because the 3 1/2 pounds I managed to lose, three of them found their way back to me.
A new exercise as of LWL is swimming. I was going to an indoor pool 4 x a week & have just worked up to 12 laps and hurt myself, had to go to the dr. so now swimming is off the deck. I'm feeling very discouraged for gaining back the allbeit small, weight loss and not being able to do my fav. new exercise. HELP!
